In this week’s #ThursdayThought, I decided to share some of my intimate thoughts on being in a blended family & being a “stepmother” <—–eew, ok, in real life, we don’t EVER use that word in my family but because that’s what most of y’all refer to it as, I had to say it just for y’all to understand. But now that we’ve got that out the way, don’t expect me to use that ugly word again, lol!
I wrote this blog post a year ago- and finally thought it made sense to share it. Often in life, we create unnecessary difficulties because instead of doing what makes sense to us- we are trying to fit into what society tells us things should look like. This can also be detrimental to a relationship. When we have conflict in relationships, it is imperative for us to step back & look at the issue & ask ourselves, “am i in conflict because of of the actual issue OR because I am concerned about how this situation appears to others?”
This can be a challenging question for us to uncover the answer to- but it is vital that we all do a reality check with ourselves.
The only reason why I spent years feeling uncomfortable in the space as “stepmom” is because I was allowing other people to project their definitions, expectations and boxes onto me. I was afraid of being REJECTED & appearing REJECTED. The moment that I defined my relationship with my son for MYSELF is the moment that I started to relax and enjoy what we have without comparison. I love the role that I play in his life. And I am so grateful that he has the blessing of two amazing women who love him and respect one another.
Each day, our relationship continues to blossom & unfold. Allow the same for your relationships as well . . .
Until next time, remember- all that you seek, already lies within.
